Light and Typology

Explaination

In complex building types, the use of daylight and artificial light is of central importance. In museums, stage buildings, sacred buildings, health buildings, etc., the quality of interior spaces is largely determined by the lighting conditions in them. Systematic design theory, combined with building typology studies with a special focus on the subject area of daylight and artificial lighting concepts, are the focus of the Master’s focus topic “Light and Typology”.

With the constant development of light sources and materials, the need for these qualifications will grow in the future.

How has the use of daylight and artificial light changed building types and what will the development look like in the future (typogenesis through light)?

What will the use of daylight and artificial light look like in the future in different building types, in experimental, hybrid building structures and in new types for living and working?

How will the typical visual tasks of users be supported by daylight and artificial light in the future?

Contents

The courses in the Master’s focus topic “Light and Typology” are dedicated to the relevant design topics inherent in the different building types (cultural buildings, sacred buildings, health buildings, etc.), the experimental, hybrid building structures and the new types for living and working.

Special attention is paid to architectural lighting, in particular qualitative lighting design with the following aspects:

  • The vision-oriented and functional aspects of lighting.
  • The perception-oriented and design aspects of lighting
  • The architectural and design aspects of lighting

Other relevant topics are human perception, “Human Centric Lighting” and the future developments of energy-efficient solutions in lighting technology. During lectures and exercises, we discover, analyse and discuss current and future developments and regularly participate in international and interdisciplinary workshops, e.g. in the context of the Venice Biennale.

Study goals

The Master’s students with the Master’s focus topic “Light and Typology” recognise the complex interrelationships of structure, typology, light and space in architecture and interior design. Based on the knowledge and experience gained, they develop independent solutions and sustainable concepts taking into account the different needs of the users involved and thus acquire their own responsible attitude when designing complex building types.
