Acoustic design

Erklärung

The hearing ability of people defines spatial meaning and behaviour. Light and sound are important factors of room quality. Creative room acoustics describes the symbiosis of physical acoustics and the design of acoustic room situations. Integrated acoustic design places the needs of people at the centre of room design and derives an innovative design philosophy from the diverse interaction and interplay between people and space, in which acoustic design plays a decisive role.

“Design what can be heard!”
“Tuning the room!”

In addition to the physical and calculable factors of interior design, it is the quality of hearing and sound in particular, along with other perceptual qualities, that lends the atmosphere in the room unmistakability and unique selling points.

Based on the fundamentals of the physical building and room acoustics, aspects of acoustic and sound quality together with psycho- and socio-acoustic findings give the design process an original character, combined with the aim of creating a humane interior design.

The symbiosis of planning and design quality in interior design, as well as of theory and practical application of acoustic design. Philosophical aspects of “time” and “movement” find considerable importance with the catalyst “acoustic design” as an integrative part of the design process for a humane environment.

Room acoustic design as part of an overall design concept. Approaches for research into the connections between perception, affect and behaviour of people in space

  • Healthy room acoustics
  • Creative noise control – Psychoacoustics
  • Sound therapy and interior design
  • Design for the word – design for music
  • Interaction of light and sound design
  • Synaesthesia and Universal Design
  • Technology, human knowledge and design
  • Electroacoustics and acoustic staging/control
  • Real and virtual sound space

Human centered acoustic design

Most rooms have poor to insufficient room acoustics. Noise pollution is by far the greatest disturbance to the sense of well-being in a room. Noise and inadequate room acoustics are a burden to everyone from young to old. The consequences are negative effects on performance, speech comprehension and emotional social behaviour as well as impairments of health and satisfaction.

Good room acoustic conditions are therefore of crucial importance for any interior design and integration of room acoustics into a general design concept is absolutely essential. The aim is to give good room acoustics an appropriate “face” and to create a good room acoustic environment that is experienced positively in a synaesthetic sense and conveys a feeling of well-being.

This focus “Acoustic Design” in the Master’s degree course in Design offers an optimum of design possibilities for better room acoustics in convincing interior design. Creative room acoustics and sound are integrative components of an interior design concept and have in particular strong relations to lighting design. Master students are given the opportunity to understand and interpret the physical competences of room acoustics and to integrate them into spatial design concepts.
